Als laatste horde voor de Academy Awards zijn afgelopen nacht de 2015 Spirit Awards uitgereikt. Birdman ging ervandoor met de prijzen voor de beste film, de beste mannelijke hoofdrol (Keaton) en de beste cinematografie, terwijl Boyhood de awards voor beste regisseur (Linklater) en beste vrouwelijke bijrol (Arquette) in de wacht sleepte.

Ook Whiplash was een dubbele winnaar in de categorieën beste mannelijke bijrol (Simmons) en beste montage, evenals Nightcrawler voor het beste script en de beste debuutfilm.
